From whom are the world's women being saved? From themselves? From just the women and girls in the developing world? Or are those the only women and girls who need saving? Everything's peachy in the developed world, is it? And then there is this: Can the lives of women and girls, anywhere, be changed if the lives and men and boys aren't changed, too?  More

    Coffee, Tea and Domestic Violence

Your article, “Some Link Economy With Spate of Killings” (April 8, pg. A03), makes a much appreciated effort to look at the staggering numbers of murder-suicides in the last few weeks as not just isolated incidents, but symptoms of a bigger problem. The trouble is it missed naming the problem.   More

    Behind the murder-suicides

St. Petersburg Times, April 29, 2009

Why Are We Surprised When White Preppy Guys Turn Out to Be Murderers?

    Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez Official Blog, May 5, 2009

Over and over again, coast to coast, American media outlets told us how good-looking, smart and "normal" Markoff was. The hidden code in the news coverage of Markoff was clear: tall, young white guys, especially middle-class or wealthy ones in college, just don't do stuff like this. Except that they do. The United States has produced more serial killers than any other nation on earth, and 85 percent of them have been white men.  More

As of May 2, there have been 167 confirmed cases of the swine flu in the United States and one death. But there has been little news about the mass killings of 68 people across America in the last 52 days, with men doing all the killing and virtually all related to men with a history of violence against women.  More

Incest: a Feminist Core Issue That Needs Re-Politizising

    Les Penelopes, January 1, 2004

The issue of incest in the U.S. is a political issue, one of violence toward women and children that belongs to feminism. It has been hijacked and defused. Women's language has been stolen and reshaped to suit others' agendas. My hope is that reviewing the history might galvanize the action so urgently needed to get our own back.   More
